In Iran, The Politics of Holocaust Denial
From the headline,"Rival Criticizes Ahmadinejad's Holocaust Denial", one might get the mistaken impression that one of Ahmadinejad's challengers for President of Iran has denounced the anti-semitic incumbent and declared the historical truth about the attempted destruction of World Jewry.
Unfortunately, this is not the case. So called "moderate" cleric, Mahdi Karroubi did not take substantive exception to Ahmadinejad's statements but
he criticized the President for helping Israel by raising the issue: "Ahmadinejad offered the greatest service to Israel by raising the Holocaust issue because the whole world stood to support Israel," Karroubi said.
In other words, raising the "issue" is a tactical political problem. The "moderate" is not interested in correcting the historical record -- he just would keep his holocaust denial quiet so the international community does not come to Israel's defense
The deceptive headline reminds me of how the press helped create a moderate image of Iran's former President Khatami. When he was elected he sat for an interview with a major American news weekly. If you read the interview you would have thought that Iran had elected a reasonable man. While the magazine led audiences to believe that they had published a complete interview, they, in fact, published a highly edited version of an interview. You see, when the smiling cleric was asked about Israel and the United States he lost his composure as he railed against these countries. Our liberal media did not want us to think badly so they did not report all his words.
Khatami is also the father of Iran's nuclear program. While the West hailed him he started the clandestine "nuclear" program that now threatens the safety of the world.
It seems we would do well to remember ;perhaps re-phrase President Franklin's words a bit. The only thing we have too fear really is: the press for it does not report all the facts; it is now come to be subjective not objective. The terrible days of infamy seem to have come, when a free press , a free people reject the truth in order too please leaders of another country; which even in their own interviews calls them the fool.
