Obama Changes Course on Iran
Taking to the airwaves before his trip to Saudi Arabia and his Egyptian speech to the Muslim world, President Obama sat for an
interview with the BBC. In this interview Obama backtracked on the timetable for talks with Iran that he made with Prime Minister Netanyahu at his side. He proclaimed to the BBC that he does not want to set "artificial deadlines" but wants to see progress by the end of the year. This will undoubtedly be interpreted by the Iranians as being let off the hook. The Iranians love unlimited talks -- it gives them time to keep developing their nuclear program.
On the nuclear program, Obama broke new ground. He announced that Iran had legitimate energy needs and he indicated that he might back the development of "peaceful" nuclear energy. This a groundbreaking change in policy. The united States has abandoned the policy of No Nukes for a rouge regime that arms terrorists to the possibility we will support helping them attain nuclear power. Do not be fooled by the term "peaceful" nuclear power. Its the same process but longer to turn peaceful power into weapons grade nuclear power.
Keep in mind that the Clinton Administration decided to give North Korea peaceful nuclear power: What they did is help North Korea attain weapons grade nuclear power Obama is clearly open to trying this failed experiment again.
In today's
Wall Street Journal, Bret Strephens documents the close nuclear based relationship between Iran and North Korea.
In his recent interview before his trip to Egypt, "Obama added that there is a danger 'when the United States, or any country, thinks that we can simply impose these values on another country with a different history and a different culture.'" Who is he kidding? What is good for the goose is also good for the gander! Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. President Obama does want to tell Iran what to do: he just wants to tell Israel what to do! How utterly disconcerting!
