EU: Jerusalem Is Occupied Territory
This week, The European Union's Foreign Policy chief referred to Jerusalem as "occupied territory." Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister responded, "just as the Romans failed to sever Israel's ties with Jerusalem, so will the EU's and UN's diplomats."
One Jerusalem has repeatedly warned that Jerusalem is at the heart of the conflict between Israel and its critics. Israel's enemies understand that if Israel concedes even a portion of Jerusalem, Israel's enemies will have won a monumental victory over Israel and the West.
Jerusalem is the epicenter of this conflict, it has been since the days of the Crusades. When Al-Qaeda talks about reestablishing the Caliphate they see the new Islamic empire's center being Jerusalem. The importance of Jerusalem cuts across the Shiite and Sunni divide: Both believe that you bring the West down to its knees by capturing Jerusalem. The Iranians call their annual antisemitic diatribe celebration, Al-Quds (Jerusalem) day. While they supposedly moderate, Abbas continues to insist that Jews never occupied Jerusalem in ancient times. His beliefs coincide with the Islamic school that preaches that Solomon's Temple never existed in Jerusalem. To prove their point they have destroyed tons of antiquities that come from the First and Second Jewish Temples.
The importance of a united Jerusalem goes beyond the important religious and historical reasons why Jerusalem is the capital of only one people: The Jewish people. Strategically, an Islamic foothold in Jerusalem will be celebrated as a major victory against Israel and the West and will cause even more Muslims to join the battle to rid the world of Israel and the West.
While Prime Minister Netanyahu has reaffirmed his commitment to keeping Jerusalem united under the State of Israel, there is a disturbing report that he has reached an agreement with Obama's representative George Mitchell that includes negotiating the status of Jerusalem. An experienced Middle East expert believes that Netanyahu has accepted a solution based on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's formulation: "an outcome which ends the conflict and reconciles the Palestinian goal of an independent and viable state based on the 1967 lines, with agreed swaps, and the Israeli goal of a Jewish state with secure and recognized borders that reflect subsequent developments and meet Israeli security requirements."
"Abbas wants Israeli territorial concessions in Jerusalem as a precondition for negotiations. Netanyahu has accepted that the Palestinians will bring their claims for Jerusalem to the table, but he is not going to make this or any other concession just to bring Abbas to negotiate."
But if Abbas comes to the table will Netanyahu negotiate the future of Jerusalem?
If Israel does not hold firm on Jerusalem it means that the future of Jerusalem is in danger.
