Israel Blows a Unique Opportunity
Immediately after the formation of the Netanyahu government, One Jerusalem learned of Arab states that had been adversaries of Israel's since the creation of the Jewish State, who were anxious to join with Israel in the battle against a nuclear Iran.
These Arab states had been urging the Bush and then the Obama Administrations to make Iran the focus of their foreign policy in the Middle East. They had little success and they saw the leadership of Netanyahu as an opportunity to be exploited. After all, Netanyahu had repeatedly said that his number one priority was to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons.
Gulf states like Saudi Arabia shared Netanyahu's concerns. For them, the Iranians posed an existential threat that must be stopped.
Unfortunately, the Netanyahu government's rhetoric about stopping Iran has been reduced to a whisper as Israel continues to make the illusive peace with the Palestinians its policy focus. This has caused the Saudis to lash out at Israel. They have appeared to come to the conclusion that Israel is not serious about stopping Iran so they lifted a self-imposed silence on criticizing Israel to lambasting Israel.
After a year of silence, Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister called the Israelis childish for failing to effectively deal with the Palestinians. Once again they are on their high horse calling for the division of Jerusalem.
If Israel had developed a coalition against Iran, the Saudis would have continued their silence on the Palestinian front and they would have supported efforts to stop Iran. But Israel appears to have lost its Arab allies and a rare opportunity to change the course of the Middle East.
