We guess the term "moderate" is a relative value judgment. In the debate over the 9-11 Mosque we have heard time and again that the Imam and his wife are "moderate" Muslims. Those who have promulgated this line have not moderated their descriptions even as evidence piles up that he (they) may not be so moderate. There has been exposure given to his statements equating the United States with Al-Qaeda, his refusal to call Hamas a terrorist organization, his Muslim Brotherhood connections, and his association with visual anti-Semites, but his defenders keep on promoting him as a moderate.

Now the Wall Street Journal adds more non-moderate musings of the Imam. In a published letter, the Imam commented on Sadat's peace with Israel. He argued that there are times when you make peace with your enemy but your battle continues on until you have the advantage. He cites an historical example and ends with this prediction: "In a true peace it is impossible that a purely Jewish state of Palestine can endure. . . . In a true peace, Israel will, in our lifetimes, become one more Arab country, with a Jewish minority."
