Every year the historic link to atrocities that happened during the First World World grow weaker, sad to say. Soon at the yearly memorial at Ieper (Flanders), the very last fighting soldier will be absent. One could then ask : did it really all happen like they've said ? Was it that bad ? Maybe there was a lot of bias from people who lived through it ? People would having second thoughts. One gripes back to books, watches film, visits museums ... The same applies to the extermination of very large 'minorities' during the Second War. Millions of fellow europeans of the Jewish faith being industrially exterminated at the Shoa. These events were infinitely better documented than those of 30 years earlier. One can question all and everything in a free society....we have the most modern means of documentation and communication at our fingertips now. Sadly we, the hundreds of millions of educated, free men and women, remain disinterested at the lurking dangers at the start of a new millenium. Thankfully brave and intelligent people like we were able to hear speak at this medium do their utmost to reach a large audience. The big problem however remains "how" to reach the overall majority not listening in, sound asleep ? In a free society the masses have our destiny in their hands. Only the majority counts. Also my heart goes out to the many brave people who greatly sacrifice, many paying with their lifes, in a desperate and courageous, though mostly futile effort, to get out from under the boot. Let us honour these heroes by at least bringing their heroic protests into the spotlight. Dictators would also think twice before just putting them away at a first valiant step.
