The response within Israel's ruling coalition to reports that the Olmert government has been offering Abbas's Palestinians large chunks of Jerusalem has set off a political storm in the Holy Land.

The head of the Pensioners Party said, " The government does not have a majority (to support) Haim Ramon's opinions on anything to do with Jerusalem. He does not have a majority in Kadima, not in Labor, not in Shas, and not in Yisrael Beitenu ...."

Deputy Prime Minister Eli Yishai said, " I strongly oppose Minister Ramon's initiative. Jerusalem is the city that has been bringing together the Jewish people for thousands of years, and is not a bargaining chip or piece of real estate. Jerusalem is the Jewish people's right of existence and there is no one who is able to give up that right."

Strong opposition has also been voiced within Olmert's Kadima Party:

Commenting on Ramon's position, Nir Barakat from Kadima said that a move to divide Jerusalem "would compromise Israel's sovereignty over the holy sites and the Old City as well as end in the transfer of Jerusalem neighborhoods to the Palestinians. I remind you that these positions go against Kadima's guiding principles...first and foremost...is a unified Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel."

A source close to Benjamin Netanyahu said that he was preparing to personally voice his opposition to any division of Jerusalem to Secretary of State Rice who is in Jerusalem.
