As rockets continue to fall on innocent Israelis, as Israel's Defense Force declares that Egypt has allowed terrorists and weapons to enter Gaza, and as the world gears up to criticize Israel for reducing power to Gaza -- the most serious turn of events that befell tiny Israel came from inside the country.
The Winograd Commission, a group of distingushed Israelis charged with investigating the reasons why Israel failed to eradicate Hezzbalah, issued their findings and one of their distingushed members declared that the Commission held back criticism of Olmert because they feared it would harm the peace process.
Instead they trained their fire on the Israeli Defense Forces as they virtually let the politicians off the hook. Here is how a respected Israeli journalist put it:
"In the second, analytical part of the report, Prof. Yehezkel Dror and his colleagues devoted about 200 outstanding pages to crucifying the IDF. However, not a single page was devoted to the preparation and conduct of the Prime Minister's Office. Nor was room found in the report for a description of the preparation and conduct of the Defense Ministry, the Foreign Ministry and the government plenum. Because of that, there is no escaping the assertion that the Winograd Committee betrayed its task. The committee for investigating the campaign in Lebanon failed egregiously, a failure that undermines its credibility and overturns the ethical validity of its assertions."
The other day in an interview, one of the commission members announced the important role the non-existent peace process played and his fear that Netanyahu might come to power if the Commission strongly criticized the government.
Imagine, a public inquiry into the failure of the government to prosecute a war against a mortal and militarily inferior enemy fails to report the facts because of what its members considered a higher calling: Keeping the inept government in power.

Israel wakeup before it is too late.
It is unconscionable that politics should play into a professional analysis of Israel's apparent defeat in the War of 2006. Is there really a peace process happening at this moment? When will the powers to be wake up and come to terms with the true Palestinian agendum: the replacement of the Land of Israel with the Land of Palestine? It is easy to find t-shirts with the word Palestine covering the entire country of Israel in the Old City of Jerusalem shuk. President Abbas refers to the two Palestinians involved in the homocide-suicide bomber attack in Dimona as martyrs. Is the Israeli military at fault for the debacle two summers ago...or those running the national government whose judgment prolonged an incessantly disastrous pummeling of the North by Hizbullah? Governmental leadership can demand military leaders to step down immediately if thelatter individuals' judgment is deemed impaired: why can't government officials of the ineffective variety face elections, especially when their poor judgment may lead to Israel's demise in the near future?
Talk about the tail wagging the dog . . .
Maybe it's us in the diaspora that are off base, but to my eyes too many Israeli politicians cannot see the forrest for the trees.
