Vote Jerusalem on the Monopoly Board!
[02.06.2008]
UPDATE (Feb 20): Keep Voting! Thanks to you, Jerusalem is now #4! We're aiming for #1! VOTE EVERY DAY! Hasbro encourages it. The makers of Monopoly are inviting fans worldwide to vote in an on-line contest to determine which 22 cities will be etched in the collective memory for a new global edition of the 75-year-old game. The contest, which got under way this week and will continue through February 28, will allow Monopoly fans the world over to cast their ballots for the 10 best cities out of a pre-selected list of 68, including Jerusalem, Israel. The 20 cities with the highest number of votes will make it onto the new board. Please ONLY vote for Jerusalem. Voting for other cities will reduce Jerusalem’s relative scoring. You can vote EVERY DAY up to Feb. 28. Here are step-by-step instructions. Please VOTE NOW!
VOTING INSTRUCTIONS:
In the right-pane, click ‘Sort By: Cities’ (see our diagram) Scroll down to ‘Jerusalem, Israel’ > Click it. A pop-up appears, click ‘Add to My Cities’ A small picture of Jerusalem should appear in lower section of the screen. (Please do not select any other cities. This would reduce Jerusalem’s scoring.) Click Vote. Click ‘Create your login now.’ Enter a desired Username and Password > Click Save. You will receive a confirmation email at the entered address. Click the link in the email. Once a day until Feb. 28, repeat Steps 1 through 6.
Have you signed the Jerusalem Petition?
The change in map organization on Hasbro's site results in difficulty finding and clicking on Jerusalem? Hasbro is not playing fair. But you can keep voting anyway, in spite of Hasbro's obvious bias!
Also: those who spend energy posting anti-Semitic comments and falsehoods here must be desparate to vent their hatred just anywhere. How pathetic they are! Those of us voting simply love Jerusalem!
Posted by: Chaya at February 28, 2008 6:50 AM
So many of these comments are completely OFF THE WALL! This Monopoly has **nothing**
to do with the capital of any country --Chicago is one of the choices!! And most especially,
HASBRO NEVER PLANNED TO PUBLISH COUNTRY NAMES ON THE FINAL GAME!! If you don't believe me you should take 1 minute to send e-mail to Hasbro to confirm: Peter Burling . Or just check the terms & conditions on the website where you vote for your favorite city!!

No problem. Israel is implied in the name Jerusalem, the others call it "al Quds". Everyone knows the People that are dedicated to Jerusalem.
Posted by: Maotz at February 26, 2008 5:05 PM
no matter what else comes about with this monopoly game thing, i still feel great joy that those of us who love the precious city of Jerusalem came together and voted it from being out of the top 20 all the way up to at least #4 (and hopefully higher)...that is a victory in itself

Thank you Gershon.
Maybe your history lesson will spur at least some cursory observers and couch potatoes to finally dive in and do their own research instead of relying on the boob tube's 30 sec snippets for their knowledge base. It is true that history of anti-Semitism and its inertia argues against people wanting to really understand the facts. Yet there is still hope. There are more educated people in the Western world today, all with more access to factual information, than at any time in the past. May be ones who consider themselves intelligent and educated will care enough to separate facts from fiction. There is still hope that free-thinking people may still achieve ethical clarity, and that justice will eventually prevail. If not, there's little chance that they'll remain free-thinking for long.

ATTN EUGENE: One Jerusalem’s drive was as legitimate as many other campaigns around the world, e.g. http://www.helpriga.lv/ . Hasbro themselves have advertised on yahoo to try and get people to vote. The people who really ruined it were the vociferous complaints from pro-Palestinian groups who could not stomach seeing Israel written after the word Jerusalem. It was their complaints and the media stir up, most notably by BBC online who contacted Hasbro to question them on the matter. If Israel collects the garbage in Jerusalem, it should be listed as the corresponding country. Hasbro have bowed to partisan blackmail and it is them you should be “thanking”.

Dave (25/02) claims Jerusalem has been the capital of Palestine as long as he lives. Is he for real ? There never was a sovereign country called Palestine and Jerusalem was made the Capital of the Jewish nation by King David some 3000 years ago and has been its capital ever since, even though the land and the city were ruled by invaders. As I said in my previous comment the Muslims have ruled there almost continuously since almost 1400 years ago, however they never considered Jerusalem important. Indeed it did not even have a local government, let alone a regional or national government, located in it. It was governed from elsewhere. Only after the Jews had begun to return to their homeland in larger numbers during the latter part of the 1800's did the Muslims suddenly claim that Jerusalem was important to Islam. They were probably afraid the Jews would demand the land and Jerusalem, that righfully belong to them, be returned. That this claim was false is exposed by considering that Jerusalem is mentioned 653 times in the Jewish Holy Scriptures and about 150 times in the Christian Bible, whereas it is not mentioned at all in the Koran ! Its importance to Judaism is further shown by noting that since the Romans exiled the Jewish People from their land, each religious Jew has mentioned during his three times daily prayers Jerusalem (or its equivalents Zion and G-d's City) a staggering 27,000 times per year !! The records show that since the destruction of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem almost 1900 years ago, thousands upon thousands of Jewish and Christian pilgrims have made a pilgrimage to it, whereas since the Muslim invasion almost 1400 years ago, only a handful of Muslims made such a trip, even though they obviously lived a lot closer to Jerusalem than the Christians and most of the Jews did. The region was only known as Palestine by the western nations. The Turks ruled there for 400 years until 1917. They referred to it as southern Syria. This explains why Syria still considers Jordan and Israel as part of Syria. In 1920 the League of Nations decided that the land East and West of the Jordan, would be named Mandatory Palestine and delegated Britain to rule over it temporarily to ensure it would eventually become the national homeland of the Jewish People. Since that time Britain issued Palestinian passports to all Jews and Arabs who lived there and to all those who settled there. In the main until 1948, when people referred to Palestinians they meant the Jews there not the Arabs. The overwhelming majority of Arabs who lived there in 1948, when modern Israel was re-established, came as migrants from the surrounding Arab lands, being attracted by the employment opportunities created by the Jews since their return in the 1800's. For instance in the period 1921 to 1927 alone, the Arab population increased by 75% due to this migration. What then is the basis for the claim of "the inalienable rights of the Palestinian People to all of Palestine" when perhaps 90% are migrants or their descendants ? The idea of creating a Palestine for the Arabs was born only after Israel won the 6-day War in 1967. Indeed even the UN, in its Resolution no. 242 of 1967, only speaks of the countries surrounding Israel having to negotiate with it to determine recognised and secure borders between them. There is no mention of a Palestinian state.

ATTN EUGENE: My communication with Hasbro Pub Relations indicated they had **never** intended to put country names on the final board. Maybe you should check your facts before spouting off like that.

Radical Islam is out to replace all other religions. Remember they blew up 2 1000-year old buddhas in Aphgahnistan, and build a mosque on the birthplace of Raam in India. They want Jerusalem, because it is holy to Jews and Christians.

I would just like to thank you, in the name of the entire world, for having ruined this contest for all of us. Because of your drive to get Jerusalem, Israel on the Monopoly board, we now have only the city names displayed. Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart, for inflicting on the whole world, your bitter dispute for land grabbing.

Jerusalem must always be the Capital city of Israel & must never be divided.
Posted by: Boz Fehler at February 25, 2008 9:43 AM
I wholeheartedly agree with Stuart Rivens' comment. Jerusalem is not your internationally recognized capital - As long as I have been living it has been the capital of Palestine but thats neither here nor there. Monopoly is an international game, so it should only use internationally recognized cities. Stick with Tel Aviv with the international version then perhaps you can make an Israeli version to be sold internally that has the word Israel written beneath every city you have eyes on occupying in the future.
Posted by: Dave at February 25, 2008 6:56 AM
Dear Stuart,
A few authentic facts about the history of Jerusalem and Israel which may contribute to your understanding:
a) Jerusalem was the capital City of a Jewish nation more than 3,000 years ago ; Jews never left willingly and despite many foreign conquests, they have always had a presence in the land.
b) Jerusalem was the site of two Jewish temples which were destroyed and its remnants on the Temple Mount are today proof of their existence, although the Arabs are attempting to destroy even those ancient artifacts.
c) The Moslem Arabs only conquered Jerusalem in 638 A.D. but never had a country there.
d) The name 'Palestine' was given to Judea by the Romans in an effort to sever the identity of Jews from the land but that was a futile effort as throught the centuries Jews never lost their connection. No established nation other than that of the Jews ever existed in the land.
e) In 1948, the Jordans illegally occupied the eastern section of Jerusalem and the Jewish population either was killed or fled; that is why that part of the city is falsely called
'Arab east Jerusalem'.
f) In 1967, Israel reunited both parts of the City , rebuilt that which the Jordanians had destroyed - 56 of 57 synagogues and the ancient cemetery on the Mount of Olives.
g) In the last century, the League of Nations
decreed a Jewish homeland in 'Palestine' which then included Jordan and today's Palestine. The British Mandate was to have facilitated this.
h) The British failed in the obligation and appeased the Arabs whose religious leader, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, sided with Hitler during WWll.
i) Despite all odds, including a hostile U.N., Israel is a free nation, multi-ethnic, technically
advanced, and contributing much to a world that is often taken in by hostile rhetoric of her Arab/Muslim neighbors who want the whole M.E. to themselves. Their terrorism against Jews in the past now has an 'international flavor'.
j) Jerusalem, united for 40 years under Jewish sovereignty, is an integral part of Israel whose guardianship assures that it respected and open to people of all faiths.

Jerusalem has been the capital of Israel since the time of King Saul, King David, King Solomon and onward.
That was over two thousand three hundred years ago.
How did the palestinians and muslims come into the picture? - By attacking and killing all the way to South East Asia.
But wait - Maybe the Arabs just do not have enough land.
After all they only occupy about Two Hundred times the land mass of Israel with enough oil for all of them to live in the lap of luxury.
You read correctly - Two Hundred times.
So what's the problem ?
That's not enough

Finally Hasbro has done a right thing. Just because people think that the stolen land of Jerusalem belongs to Israel - they have been told otherwise. I am glad Hasbro has done the right thing. Time for other companies to follow in Hasbro's foot steps. To all who say Jerusalem is Israel - just because you yell the loudest and kill the most, doesnt make your claim right. God Willing, the colonist will be dismantled.

Dina (22/2) correctly put Stuart Rivans (21/2) in his place. It would take too long to fully apprise Stuart of the facts, however please permit me to pass on a few facts: If Israelis are really that vicious/rabid then what does that make the Arabs, who have been terrorising and murdering Jews in their Promised Land for a century. After all Israel has always only been defending itself against these attacks. It is Stuart who is completely ignorant of Jerusalem's history. Hasbro's claim it has a history of over 2,000 years is misleading. It is over 4,000 years old and has been known as Jerusalem over 3,000 years. Its history is almost exclusively Jewish. The Arabs invaded the land less than 1400 years ago and ruled it only about 35 years. Following their rule it was then always under Muslim rule but not Arabs, except for the Crusader period of course. These rulers however always considered it as a backwater. The Romans ruled the Jews harshly and oppressed them. The Jews rose up repeatedly against their rule but were thoroughly defeated in a final war in 135 CE. The Romans then exiled most of the Jews and renamed the land Palestina, after the extinct nation of Philistines, in an attempt to erase the connection of the Jews to their land (The word 'Philistines' comes from the Hebrew Phlishtim, meaning "Invaders". Indeed it is generally accepted this people came from the island of Crete and of course have no link to Arabs). Newspapers began to claim (falsely) that under International Law Israel illegally occupies Jerusalem and the territories and that has gradually been adopted as fact by the people at large, but in reality this is not the case as experts on International Law have declared. Israel's land area represents 0.02% of the total Arab land area, so who is depriving who, considering that the Arabs continue to tell their people in Arabic they will not rest until they have destroyed Israel, while in English stating they want peace. Israel indeed needs to be saved from itself. It must be encouraged to stand up for its rights and demand what is rightfully theirs instead of forever trying to appease an enemy, that is not serious about peace, and stop making one-sided concessions. Regarding Israel being an apartheid country, Stuart obviously is not aware that from Israel's foundation in 1948 Arabs have had the same rights as Jews, have seats in Parliament, study freely at Israeli Universities, which also employ Arab academics, have complete freedom of their religion and access to their religious sites (something Israelis were denied when the Arabs ruled the Jewish sites) and have judges in Israeli courts. The League of Nations (predecessor of the UN) in 1920 had designated as land to become a country for the Jews all the land that has become known in recent times as Gaza, Westbank, Golan Heights, Jordan and what is currently known as Israel. How can a country illegally occupy land that is legally and historically theirs to begin with ? There is much more, but I think Stuart gets the picture.
Posted by: Gershon at February 24, 2008 9:08 PM
Jerusalem is the Capital of Israel. The political conflict has not made any change, and the Monopoly game should not become a victim of Terroristic behavior. Israeli leaders have tried to placate everyone, and it has only make their security ineffective. Jerusalem will not be divided, and the Monopoly game must include Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel.

Dina, 22 Feb, has summarised this so cogently and concisely that I simply reiterate her submission. To quote "Dear Stuart, may I with all respect ask you to seriously study history BEFORE you give your opinion??? When was there a palestinian nation? Who gave that place the name Palestine? The so-called palestinians are the descendants of which arab country?? What did late king Hussein say : that palestine was where, in the arab world?? If you happen to read the Bible, to WHOM did GOD give that land?? If you find the RIGHT answer to all this, then you'd have found the truth, then you can give an opinion."

Hey Dina; I totally agree with you; Stuart doesn't know history. Jerusalem has belonged to the Jews 2500plus years. Talk about Rabid talk? Stuart you need a history lesson for sure. Connie
Posted by: Connie at February 24, 2008 6:36 PM
Stuart. If anyone here is "rabid" & "near-pychotic", it is you - a symbol of the deranged Left, brainwahsed to believe that the only democracy in the Middle East - Israel - is an evil entity. And please do not refer to a "Palestinian" "people" as none exists. This non-people had its chance for a (23rd) state U.N. Resolution 181 of November 1947. It rejected it. After the 1967 war, when Levi Eshkol offered to return all territories won in a war of aggression against Israel, this was met by the 3 no's - "No peace, no recognition, no negotiation."
On the Arab side, there is & has always been only rejectionism coupled with complaining. We are all so sick of it.

Posted by: Elvis Baldwell at February 24, 2008 4:35 PM
The name Palestine comes from the Romans, who decided to make fun of the Jews that they destroyed back around AD70. This name was taken from the Philistine name. Therefore, Palestine has never really existed, while the history of Jerusalem can be traced back to King David. If one looks at the facts, one can see that a lot of Arabs (but not all), do not really consider Jerusalem important in terms of its spiritual power. After all, they say it's their third holiest site. To Judaism, and Christianity, it's their holist site. Clearly, Jerusalem needs to be shown the proper respect and voted #1!

Thank God that they removed Israel from Monopoly. Tel Aviv was the capital of Israel when she was made and it shall remain that way. I think that zionists are getting too greedy ... learn to coexists amongst the Arabs and same goes for the extremist Arabs learn to live with us ... because we are here to STAY but on the same note ... our faith DOES NOT TEACH to be derogatory towards other faiths or cultures, so shame on fanatic zionists -- you are using our religion and abusing it in the name of poltiics and personal greed.

I'm getting sick and tired of vicious, rabid Israelis claiming Jerusalem as their own.
It shows a complete ignorance about the huge history the city has and a near-psychotic desire not to acknowledge the fact that East Jerusalem is officially regarded as 'occupied' under International Law.
Shame on you who continue to deprive the Palestinian people of what you yourselves fought for and now possess - a homeland.
Israel needs saved from itself. Hasbro should boycott this country until this disgraceful apartheid has ended.

I just voted, and now all cities are displayed without countries. I wonder if that is how they will be printed on the board game. It appears that Hasbro is making an attempt to placate those of us who correctly identify Jerusalem as part of Israel, but it is such a shame that the politics of this has extended to a family board game contest.

I have just e-mailed Hasbro expressing my shock about Jerusalem being listed as an Israeli city, which is contrary to International Law. They replied assuring me that 'Jerusalem' will appear without a country. Thank God they came back to their senses. No one is saying it should say: Jerusalem - Palestine... but it sure shouldn’t say Jerusalem- Israel either.

“BURN MONOPOLY” CAMPAIGN ANNOUNCED BY OUTRAGED SUPPORTERS OF ISRAEL
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: JerusalemIsIsrael@mac.com
New York (Feb 20) – With outrage mounting across the world at the Hasbro Inc. decision to eliminate the country of Israel from it’s association with Jerusalem in its Monopoly Here and Now : The World Edition contest, a grass roots campaign to burn Monopoly boards is being mounted worldwide. Organized by “Jerusalem is Israel” a New York-based organization, the mass burnings are take place on February 29, the same day that Hasbro is due to announce its selection of cities to be included on the World Edition board.
It has been determined that the PR company that influenced Hasbro to eliminate Israel from its website is British-based firm Brazen House in Manchester and that the firm has buckled to anti-Israeli pressure groups in order to ensure that there is no mention of Israel in the once popular game board. In the coming days, exact times and locations of the “Burn Monopoly” initiative will be announced.

I am glad they have changed the listing to just Jerusalem. Jerusalem is a contested city. Monopoly is a game and should not be used as a political tool.
Posted by: John Reeds at February 20, 2008 11:04 AM
I sent the following e-mail to Hasbro:
I have noticed that Israel has been removed as the respective country of Jerusalem.
Hasbro have promised that they would not second-guess the UN, should Jerusalem be included. So will Jerusalem be listed as Jerusalem, Internationally Administered Zone? Are the borders of the Jewish state and the Arab state as proposed by the UN accepted today? No! Israel is only required to withdraw only to its pre-1967 boarders, not the ones defined by the UN in 1947. Jerusalem is not currently a “corpus separatum” and will probably never be so in the future. Israel currently administers the whole city and therefore this should be reflected on the board.
Monopoly also seems to have managed to do what the international community have failed to accomplish for over 50 years – unite North and South Korea! Why is Seoul listed as in Korea?
Why is Montreal listed as in Canada? Quebec lays claim to the city.
Many in Hong Kong wish to become an independent republic, not ruled by China?

It would not be right for 'Jerusalem, Israel' to appear on the board as the city was illegally annexed in breach of Security Council resolutions.

'Jerusalem, International City'
